My USA chronology, "Bicentennial Almanac", C.D.Linton, has the entry:

1893 Aug.23-29  A tropical storm devastates a coastal area
from Charleston, South Carolina, to Savannah, Georgia,
killing nearly 1,000 persons.

Possibly this is the "hurricane", then moving up the coast to NYS.

A check of newspaper microfilm toward the end date might confirm
the storm reaching the LI area.
