CONFERENCE UPDATE - KEYNOTE ADDRESS
Robert A. Slayton
“New York's Al Smith: Creating a Life.”

Chair and Associate Professor of History at Chapman University, Professor
Slayton is the author of the just published biography of New York Governor
Al Smith, "Empire Statesman: The Rise and Redemption of Al Smith."  His talk
will include a discussion of his research strategies as well as a
biographical portrait of the Governor.

Professor Slayton is graduate of the Bronx High School of Science; he earned
his B.A at State University of New York at Buffalo and his MA and PhD at
Northwestern University.  He is the recipient of numerous grants for the
work leading to "Empire Statesman".  One of his earlier books BACK OF THE
YARDS: THE MAKING OF A LOCAL DEMOCRACY was a CHOICE outstanding book of the
year for 1986-1987.  In addition he is the first professor in the history of
Chapman University to win the Valerie E. Scudder Outstanding Teaching
Award -- in 1990 and 1995.

The organizers of the 3rd Annual Researching New York Conference welcome
proposals for papers, panels, workshops, roundtables, and exhibits on New
York history from the colonial period to the present.  The conference will
be held at the University at Albany—State University of New York on November
16, 2001.  Ours is a diverse conference that brings together researchers,
archivists, librarians, public historians, graduate students, museum
curators, Web site creators, and documentarians.  As in previous years, the
conference will emphasize the integral relations between researchers and
archival resources.

Proposals are due by July 15, 2001.  Full panel or roundtable proposals
(including chair/commentator) are encouraged.  Partial panels, and
individual submissions are welcome.  For panels and partial panels, please
submit a one page abstract of the complete session, a one page abstract of
each paper or presentation, and a one page curriculum vita for each
presenter.  For individual submissions, please submit a one page abstract
and a one-page curriculum vita.  All submissions must include names,
addresses, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses.  We prefer electronic
