        The history of place names is a topic which has been the focus of
inquiries over the years on this list.  "The History of Nassau County Community
Place-Names" has recently been published under the auspices of Hofstra
University's Long Island Studies Institute by Empire State Books. Richard
Winsche's 160-page book gives information on more than one hundred Nassau
