Paul Newman originally wanted to film "Nobody's Fool" in Hudson, but the lack of restaurants and hotel space for the production company forced a move to Beacon. Both Beacon and Hudson share the same look: 19th century buildings, aging downtown, long main street sloping to the Hudson River.

It seems that Russo's novels are all based, at least in regard to the
characters, on his home town of Gloverslville, NY. He tends to put the
geographic location a little further away. For example, his descriptin
of where the town is in "Nobody's Fool", clearly identifies it
geographically as Ballston Spa but people from Gloversville assure me
that they know the real people. It was filmed partly in Hudson, but also
in some other locations in the Hudson Valley.

"Ironweed" with Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep was filmed in Albany and
Hudson, the more recent film, "The Horse Whisperers" was fimed in
Saratoga County, there was some Victorian-type film, with Daniel
Day-Lewis that was filmed in Troy, NY, and scenes from "Billy Bathgate"
were filmed at the Saratoga Race Track. The first major film I recall
being filmed around the Capital District was "The Way We Were". Some
scenes were shot on the campus of Union College in Schenectady and some
in downtown Ballston Spa at an old time soda fountain.

It makes me laugh that Michael Mann did not feel the Adirondacks were
appropriate to use for the filming of "Last Of the Mohicans" which was
shot in North Carolina.
