Thanks to everyone who responded to my query about upstate films.  I had
loads of answers and a couple requests for summaries.  So,
here goes.

The films fall into a couple categories
1).  set in New York but not filmed here:
        Drums Along the Mohawk, Northwest Passage, Last of the Mohicans, It's a
Wonderful Life, Broken Chain, the Farmer Takes a Wife, A Place in the
Sun, Hello Dolly, Duke of West Point, Long Grey Line, Saratoga Trunk,
The Sweet Hereafter, Spellbound.

2.  early silent films:
        many, many in Ithaca and two Edison ones (Gladiola and Under the Apple
Tree) from Rennselaer County

3.  documentaries
        Brother's Keeper (and many more I'm sure)

4.  Filmed upstate but not necessarily about upstate
        Sterile Cuckoo, The Scent of a Woman, Age of Innocence, Horse
Whisperer, Slap Shot, Grand Prix, The Way We Were, the Natural

5.  filmed upstate, using, I think, some sense of identity about the
region
        Ghost Story, Ironweed, Nobody's Fool, Eerie, Dadetown, Buffalo 66, Hide
in Plain Sight, A Fan's Notes, Lady in White, Northwest Passage, Cold
River, Liebestraum, A Time to Remember, Niagara, Niagara

And the unclassifiable category:
        a group of avant garde films made in the 1970s in Binghamton, and a
group of recent, or about to be released independent films including
Freak Talks About Sex, the Legend of Cryin' Ryan, Stumped, I Drink Your
Blood, Come Again, and my personal favorite, Slugs, muerte viscosa,
filmed in Wayne County.

So, love to hear if there's more out there--particularly in the
documentary category.  Thanks to all who responded.
