Grants of land ("patents") by the colony and state of New York since 1664 have been recorded by the Secretary of State. The patent books and related records have been transferred by the Secretary of State to the New York State Archives. For information about those records contact the archivist on duty at 518-474-8955, Mon.-Fri. 9-5 except state holidays, or visit the Archives' web site at http://www.archives.nysed.gov (click on "Records and Research" and search the online catalog).

Most of the colonial land grants are listed by name of patent and date of grant in John H. French, Gazetteer of the State of New York (New York: 1860), pp. 49-52. This work has been reprinted and is widely available in libraries throughout New York State. The best maps of patents and their subdivisions (statewide and county-level) are found in Julius Bien, comp., Atlas of the State of New York (New York: 1895). This atlas is scarce and has never been reprinted, but it is available in some large academic and public libraries around the state. A smaller-scale map of patents is found in Robert J. Rayback, comp., Richards Atlas of New York State (Phoenix, N.Y.: 1965).

To collect information for an article about the early land grants,
patents, and other awards of land in what is now the county of
Saratog, NY, I would like your suggestions for where such material
might be found. I have a print of the "Sauthier" map of 1779 and a
copy of the BeersTopographical Atlas for Saratoga, NY, 1866.

A brief search of the NYS Library Web Catalog has yielded:

George W. Bagley collection, 1816-1937, which includes
"miscellaneous family letters, account, land patents and grants,
1816-1902. [probably Glens Falls, Warren Co.]

Bowman, Fred Q., Landholders of Northeastern New York, 1739-1802;
"Contains list of land grants in patents in the present New York
State counties: Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Washington, and Warren.
"   [Saratoga Co., not included]

New York State . Surveyor General. "List of land patents granted by
the state, 1784-1794, 5 volumes. Two volumes are in rough
alphabetical order by last name; three volumes are chronological by
filing date. [may be difficult to extract the "Saratoga" grants]

Thank you.     Fletcher
