David Steven Cohen's book The Dutch-American Farm (NYU Press: 1992) has a
lengthy discussion of hay ricks (he calls them hay barracks) including their
European roots, their construction, and a great photo (pg. 80-85 mainly, photo
on page 110) it's in the index under "hay barrack".

It would make great reproductions.
