Villages mentioned in the 1860 NYS Gazetteer, French,
are labelled with (p. v.) and (p. o.), which are identified
at the beginning of the Index as "post village" and "post office".

I can correlate the post offices to those named in Kay/Smith's
volume on NYS post offices.

What is the significance of a "post village", when NOT a post office.

(Is this explained anywhere in the Gazetteer or the companion
Index-volume?)
