Believe this relates to the rather involved & lengthly controversy
between NY and NH over the "Hampshire Grants"-the area that later
became Vermont.

Interestingly enough, Ethan Allen began his career as leader of a
band of terrorists regularly looting and burning the homesteads of
settlers in the 'disputed territories' holding land grants from New
York.
